Why I Chose This
My Topic/Why I Chose It
The topic I chose to do is euthanasia, the administering of lethal medicine by physicians to end a patient's life. I chose to do research on it because it is growing concern that could get out of hand if it is legalized and may also have an effect on us in the future if it gets legalized. The concern that may arise that if it becomes legal, more and more elderly patients will become victims of it.
Who I Wrote To
I chose to write to Katherine Morris, who is a professor at The University of New Mexico and a surgical oncologist, who is currently in a court case Morris vs New Mexico where she is trying to get the court to legalize euthanasia for a patient with uterine cancer. I wrote to her explaining the consequences that would occur if the court legalized this act.
Other Possible Choices
Other topics that I could potentially have written about are how we are making advances in the medical world that allow humans to live longer than ever before. Another topic could be have palliative care from nurses and physicians increases the livelihood of patients, even those who are terminally ill.
Take Action
If you would like to get involved yourself, there are several organizations and a few states, like Oregon, where euthanasia is legal or are trying to legalize it. You could write to these organizations and give your opinion with valid facts and opinions on whether your support it or not. As I am doing, you can write to Katherine Morris who is currently in a court case and try to convince her to drop the case in order to prevent the legalization of euthanasia.
